With copies of Harriet Jacobs’s story in their hands, my students will be able to explore in-depth the horrors of American Slavery from the perspective of a remarkable woman in her own words. They will write essays analyzing a theme in the autobiography, as well as collaborate on a project that examines slavery in other contexts (e.g. economic slavery of workers, or fictional accounts like Margaret Atwoods’s “The Handmaiden’s Tale.” They will be asked to make connections between their choice and Jacobs’s narrative. Students will have options to present their research in a variety of media, including Podcasts and dramatic interpretations. It is important for me to diversify the reading material at our school, especially when a good portion of my students are people of color. This book will teach us all something about the legacy of race in our country.
