My students are going to complete an engineering design challenge based on a real-world problem. Students will design or re-design systems that minimize juvenile salmon loss during passage over or around dams and other passageways.Students will be provided with models of rivers with dams installed, water flowing through them, and perler beads to represent the salmon. Their challenge will be to safely transport 20 "salmon" across the dam, using the tools provided, including tubing, straws, netting, pipe cleaners, and craft sticks. Engineering design challenges engage student learning and inspire students towards careers in the field of engineering. My hope is to engage my students in at least three engineering design challenges this school year. Through these challenges, I hope to motivate my students to see multiple solutions to problems and to see that, through perseverance, they can solve real-world problems!
