As a first year teacher with an accounting background, I feel it is very important that my 2nd grade students are able to see how they can use math in their every day lives. I have set up math centers and need manipulatives to guide the students. Manipulatives such as dominoes, dice, counting bears and coins will be used through out the year to help students understand the 2nd grade math curriculum. Every student should be able to recognize a nickle from a quarter or be able to know their place values and explain that they have one thousand, two hundred, twenty, five (1,225) sticks and not one hundred, twenty, five (125). Second grade math is the foundation of basic life skills such as money and geometry. The manipulatives I have chosen will help my students understand many different math concepts. By creating a hands-on approach to math, students will be able to see how these skills will benefit them in future classes as well as setting up a lemonade stand on their neighborhood street corner.
