Twenty percent of the population at my school has limited English proficiency. As a reading and ESL teacher, I spend my time with children who are newcomers to the country, many being asylum seekers and refugees from Central America, South America, Asia, and Africa. My goal is to create a multilingual and diverse library of high interest children, teen, and young adult novels that will encourage an enjoyment of reading for everyone, not just students who are fluent in English. Research shows that students who have literacy skills in their native language are more likely to be successful becoming literate in English. I would also like to purchase headsets for book discussions and for the ability of students (who may have low fluency and/or literacy rates) to follow along in their novels using audiobooks.
