My students read at widely different levels and benefit immensely from small group reading. The two texts I have chosen reflect many of the cultural backgrounds of students in my classroom. With these class poetry sets, students will take ownership of their own small group and engage in reading, writing about, and leading their own discussions about these texts, historical connected texts, and songs of the Harlem Renaissance. They will then create their own poetry and organize a coffee house style open mic to share their pieces with their family and community to start the year off in a spirited, creative way. We will hopefully be able to combine with the music staff at our school to create a lively arts-integrated project that combines poetry, music, and art. My hope is that this project can ignite ownership of learning, identity exploration, family engagement, and creativity to gather momentum for the many projects and opportunities that lie ahead this year!
