In a first grade classroom, nothing ignites their excitement for learning as much as science and engineering! Kids love learning all about the world around them, but...kids don't want to just hear about science or see pictures -- they want to do science! They want to touch and examine and wonder and problem solve and experiment... They want to experience science. Science education without a hands-on component is such a missed opportunity to start first graders off as budding scientists right from the start of their education. I want our classroom to be a hands-on learning environment, and these materials will help me do just that. I am requesting the following: • 2 experiment kits for different science topics we learn about: (1) a ‘Recycle It” kit that shows kids how paper items are recycled, (2) a Crystal Growing Tree that we’ll use to practice the observation and documentation parts of the scientific method • 2 microscope items: (1) a USB microscope that will allow me to project items onto the overhead projector, (2) a Prepared Microscope Slides kit that will be used when giving kids practice using individual microscopes • 1 Bean Germination block so that kids can see the steps in the plant cycle, which is part of our core science curriculum • 1 hands-on engineering kit (a Playground Engineering and Design Build Set) to give kids hands-on experience with different engineering tasks • 2 kits that blend science and art: (1) a science/art kit about rainbows, (2) a science/art kit about bubbles. We will do these as science rotations (practicing the scientific method with each) with the aid of 4th-grade mentors. • 2 instructional kits on topics that are sometimes hard for first graders to understand: (1) earth-moon-stars, and (2) the human body (x-rays)
