The sensory balls, games, and flashcards that I am requesting for my class will turn them into great readers and mathematicians. For example, I have, Who Has, is a great whole class game that promotes listening skills while enhancing vocabulary. This is not only great for the whole class but it helps students whose first language is not English. The sensory balls help with concentration and reduces reading and math anxiety. At the beginning of the year, we focus on letter, words and sentences so Hangman will get first graders identifying the different letters to make words that can be used to create sentences during our ELA block. Imagine being able to play a game that teaches how to blend words together rather than sounding out individual letters. More students would feel confident enough to volunteer to read in class if the Hot Dots was available to them as it gives immediate feedback and allows them to make changes if an answer is incorrect or celebrate those that are correct. As students get older they tend to be discouraged and "not like math" I'm hoping by using the workshop model to incorporate math resources such as Ten Frame Foam Dice and mats gives students a visual to manipulate in a small group. It can also be used as a resource for early finishers. The math flashcards will be used for small group intervention with students who are working on strengthening math skills.
