According to Blaine Adams' research from Northwest Missouri State University, "[there is] a strong positive relationship between sight-word recognition growth and reading level growth." I am requesting Level B, C and D readers rather than Level A readers because Levels B-D readers tend to focus on repetition of sight words which will increase recognition which builds fluency - reading level growth. Level A readers tend to focus more on vocabulary building through identifying objects in illustrations. By the end of their first year of school, students are expected to read on a Level E. Having multiple opportunities and exposure to sight words in Levels B-D readers will increase the likelihood of students meeting this goal. At our campus, many of our kindergarten students come to us without any previous exposure to literature. These students are at a severe disadvantage because they do not posses the basic skills needed to begin reading. If my project is funded, these books will be used daily in the classroom for students to practice their reading fluency in order to increase their reading level. Students will be allowed to select books based off of their own interests and will keep them in their book box. Part of our daily schedule will allow students time to practice reading independently and with a peer. The only way my students can increase their reading fluency is through practice, and when this project is funded, my students will be one step closer to being successful, life-long readers.
