Any way a student can relate to their reading creates a better understanding of the reading process. Using a novel in a book study allows for discussion and understanding of what they are reading. When students talk and express their thoughts they take ownership of their learning. More ownership, more learning. I read the novel to my students last year and we had major discussions of the characters and events tying them to their own experiences. I realized the students had made an investment in their understanding of reading. Because it was such an experience for them, I wanted to incorporate this novel as a book study this year. Wonder is such a story that all children can relate to.
