Building foundational skills in first grade is very important. Students in this grade level must increase their reading levels from C-I in just one academic school year. Students need to opportunity to practice word building, sight word fluency, word families, spelling patterns, and phonics skills in different ways. Students will be able to use these word activities independently and in small groups to help them extend their vocabulary, increase their working memory, and build fluency. Using tactile activities such word games support the development of cognitive skills, social skills, comprehension, and build a greater connection between language and it's concepts.
