The test scores in literacy for social-economic disadvantaged children continue to decline. Literary success for these children begin in kindergarten. Kindergartners need kinesthetic resources to help with comprehension of skills. Every year, the budget for education is cut, and the students suffer. Students who are from this poor, urban community are at an academic disadvantage in literacy because the necessary resources to become successful are limited. However, when teachers like me tell them that they can do whatever they want, they believe it. These children persevere, despite their home situations. Two years ago, the school was a STAR school, but now, we are on academic watch. We, including the students, are striving to change the school's status and show the State of Mississippi that children from schools in poor areas can and will excel.
