My students experiences with Covid-19 interruptions over the last few years have left students without the essential literacy and writing skills to be successful in high school. Performing a close reading of The Hobbit would give my high school freshman an opportunity to hone their literacy and writing skills while escaping the reality of every day life.
Also, providing students with a novel that they can take home will allow them to continue working in an age when hybrid learning is very much a reality. Many of my students do not have access to internet at home, so the more physical copies I can put into their hands, the better.
The Hobbit is known as one of the most popular fantasy books ever written by the father of modern fantasy and my hero, J.R.R. Tolkien. His use of the English language is second to none, and the students in my English classes would benefit greatly from a close study of his word choice and poetic skills.
Beyond improving their literacy skills, students would be encouraged to mimic Tolkien’s writing style while creating fantasies of their own as a part of a creative writing project. They would be allowed the freedom to let their imaginations run wild.
The last few years have been hard on the current generation, and reading a book like The Hobbit would give them a mental break while allowing them to improve essential skills for their futures.
