Balsa and basswood are the perfect materials to build scale models of structures that are comprised chiefly of thin struts such as aircraft, truss bridges and high-tension transmission towers. In an effort to gain understanding of the importance of planning, angle position and selection, and accuracy in calculations and construction, students will build scale models and, in the case of “bridges,” test for strength under an increasing load until catastrophic failure. For the airplanes, they’ll test for flight capability. What could be more fun than that? We need balsa and basswood strips to make these projects possible. Seventh and eighth grade is a great time to discover interests, start developing marketable skills, and start seriously sampling career possibilities. The materials requested will support five intense STEM design-and-build projects, four of which can earn students a place on the Science Olympiad team.
