By pairing math manipulatives with abstract math lessons students will form a more concrete understanding of the math concepts they will be learning this year. When students have a concrete understanding it makes it easier for them to transition to abstract understanding and eventually to the use of standard algorithms. For example using counters to model multiplication and division problems by setting up equal groups or arrays will help students master their facts by allowing them to formulate pictures in their heads. Using daisy clocks will show students that the hour and minute hands do not move independently, but rather are connected by gears to move simultaneously.
