My students attend a "STEM" school -- Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics -- and plan to attend a four-year college or university. They are very racially-diverse, typically from minority families, low incomes, and non-academically-oriented backgrounds. Often, they have survived family and neighborhood experiences with violence, poverty, and many negative influences -- but they are seeking to improve themselves and become successful after high school. My AP Statistics students could become the people who overcome their troubled backgrounds, who leave behind the difficulties of their youth, and go on to help expand our world farther, and better, than anything we can dream about today. My AP Statistics students could very well design the cars my children or grandchildren buy ... or run their own businesses in fields that don't exist today ... or invent new miracle medicines ... or be chosen as key players in the future of our world.
