In our medical biology unit, my students perform a series of investigations about human body systems. Many of my students are interested in becoming nurses or EMTs. As many of my students have gaps in their school, my class may be the first time they do science labs! We do thematic, investigative, inquiry based units. By donating to this project, my students will have the opportunity to complete a detailed anatomical dissection, performing the simulated autopsy of a fetal pig. They will first learn about the procedures followed by medical examiners and coroners to perform an autopsy. Students will begin with comprehensive qualitative and quantitative data collection about the external anatomy of the pig. We utilize the HASPI (Health & Science Pipeline Initiative) curriculum geared towards preparing students for possible careers in the medical field. Following day one of external anatomy data, day two, students perform the dissection, all the while annotating their pig with 'flags' that label key organs and medical terminology. We currently have 5 pigs and I need 3 more so that students can work in groups of 2. Over the years, I have built up standard science supplies but our digital scale no longer works and thus we need a replacement. Finally, to encourage professionalism and organization, I try to color code student work so colored paper is helpful for (and liked by) my students.
