As a second year kindergarten teacher, I have set a hefty goal for myself and my students: we will write with purpose every single day! I believe this will improve not only my students' writing skills, but their reading skills too. I am in graduate school for Reading Instruction, and I am currently studying the benefits of writing when combined with reading. Studies have shown that balanced literacy - a method of teaching that includes writing along with reading instruction - benefits students greatly in their reading abilities. Because reading is such a crucial part of kindergarten that leads itself into later life, I want to make sure my students are well-prepared. These writing blinders would greatly help my students' ability to write by giving them their own personal space to work in. I plan to use the blinders by adding tricky words, sight words, and other helpful writing pieces on the inside, to promote independent writing.
