The novel, A Long Walk to Water, is a piece of fiction based on a true story. Students have recently read historical fiction about the Holocaust and have learned what genocide is. A Long Walk to Water will help students to have a greater awareness that genocide still continues in parts of the world and is not just some historical relic. They will also learn that water, a resource that we take for granted on a daily basis is the life blood of people and without easy access to clean water, societies suffer from a wealth of hardships. This book is a great one for teaching about the continued need for tolerance and understanding of other culture in our world.
