My students need a class set class set of James and the Giant Peach, Frindle, Because of Winn-Dixie, and Who Was Helen Keller to use for instruction in the classroom. These new books will enhance the love of reading in my classroom and allow for quality instruction. Our reading units will focus on learning and applying comprehension strategies through the use of exemplary texts. My students will experience the joy of being in a community of readers and have the opportunity to discuss and build on their own experiences and understanding. Every student will be able to hold a book in their hands and really dive deep into the story. In a whole group setting, students will be able to follow along and join in the reading, while I can stop as needed to offer support or to obtain deeper understandings of ideas or content. Students may also read sections of the text in small groups and participate in discussions to promote collaboration and respond to higher depth of knowledge questions. Or, students may read sections alone to develop their independent reading skills and stamina. Having quality children’s literature in our classroom will support and improve the quality of reading instruction.
