Last year I wrote a grant to create a simulated city for my students. This "city" is called Independence Way. Within our city we have a Market, a Cafe, a Laundromat, and a Bank. When students are participating at Independence Way they are not only employees of a store, but they also get the chance to be a consumer. They function as independent adults living in the real world, in ways such as working a shift, managing their time during their lunch break to cash their paychecks, buy groceries for dinner later that night, budget their finances, and pick up their clean clothes from the laundromat. Our kids have gained so many skills both vocationally and socially as well as life skills. The time clocks and grocery carts are some accessories that Independence Way is currently lacking. With a time clock in each store, students (employees) are responsible for checking in at the beginning of each shift and checking out at the end of the shift - responsibilities that are necessary to practice for students with varying learning abilities. The grocery carts allows students to feel the natural environment of a market, and how to navigate a cart in a crowded store, or around aisles. These items will add so much more validity to a wonderful learning experience, and enhance it in ways that will have a lasting impact.
