Having a collection of high interest non-fiction texts is critical in today's classroom. Students are to be exposed to a minimum of 50% of nonfiction/ informational texts in the classroom. Our reading libraries are very much fiction centered and it is imperative that we ramp up the non-fiction options. Students enjoy reading the challenging nonfiction especially when it is formatted as graphic novels or comics. It is also critical that I am able to incorporate themes of the different cultures of my students with the texts available in my class library. These new reading materials will increase the engagement of reluctant readers as well as challenge the comfortable by exposure to new texts and styles of writing.
