As part of the new innovative program that My school is piloting, we are looking to address the Social Emotional needs of all of our students. Research has shown that if a school incorporates Social Emotional Learning into the curriculum, it can be incredibly beneficial in increasing student academics and decreasing inappropriate behaviors. As part of the SEL curriculum that we hope to incorporate next year, the 7th grade team will be creating a meditation space for students. “Kids who practice yoga, meditation and mindfulness build skills of attention, self awareness, self management leading to more responsible decision making and prosocial behavior" (Yoga 4 Classrooms founder Lisa Flynn, Forbes Magazine, 2016). These yoga mats will be used in the creation of this space, as a place where students can sit, stretch, and meditate. By incorporating a meditation space into our Rhodes to Success program next year, we are hoping to further teach students coping strategies that research has shown can be incredibly beneficial to increasing student success, behavior, and overall happiness.
