I am a special education teacher at an elementary school where the vast majority of the students receive free and reduced meals. Our school is in a neighborhood school that serves over 600 students. Many of my students are on the autism spectrum, have impulse and hyperactivity issues or are impacted by intellectual disabilities that have extreme sensory needs. The young age of my students makes them resilient, loving, caring, and intrigued. Unfortunately, it also makes them the most vulnerable as they are too young to be self sufficient. Exposing them to new dynamic learning experiences will give them a reprieve from some of their life experiences. Fidgets will be used when students are overstimulated. The beanbag and stools will serve as flexible seating in the room. The light filters will provide a calming feel.
