A huge part of kindergarten is learning the alphabet! We go over the sounds, letter names, and how to write both upper and lowercase letters. When teaching kindergarten students phonics, a big part of it is modeling! They write with me and I can show them proper letter formation. This is something they will carry with them to first grade and beyond. Unfortunately, the Zoom whiteboard is quite challenging to write on with a mouse. My handwriting is a hot mess express on Zoom! I want to give my students the most enriching distance learning experience possible and this will bring our class whiteboard to Zoom! Especially because so many English learners are in our class, it is critical that I create a print-rich environment. As much as possible, they should be surrounded by written language. Of course, this is hard to do from home! With the iPad and Apple Pencil, I can model writing for my students. Students learn directionality and the basic conventions of writing just from watching someone else write! Their brains really are amazing. Of course, students do not enter kindergarten writing already! They rely on teachers creating anchor charts and writing on the board to put their thoughts down. Often I also use (poorly) drawn pictures to bring their thinking to life! When we are beginning our first science unit of the year, the students love to share what they know and what they want to know about what we are studying. Then, when we finish the unit, they are thrilled to share what they do know.
