Our school library serves over 700 high school students and is a place where they come to find academic resources for class as well as materials for their personal reading pursuits. The current average age of our collection is older than the recommended state guidelines, and thus we are working to replace out-of-date materials with newer, more relevant titles. Our science non-fiction section is an area that needs significant improvement, and the books here would help to fill the gaps in the collection where newer titles are needed. We believe that providing access to up-to-date, accessible, and quality titles is extremely important in helping students learn, and these titles will not only complement the science curriculum, but also provide opportunities to enhance comprehension and research skills that will be useful in high school as well as college. These books have been specifically chosen to aid in research projects and essays, to appeal to specific interests in an engaging way, and/or to replace older titles that are no longer relevant and have been weeded. The "pure science" section of our print collection has been identified as (1) having one of our oldest average copyright dates and (2) including titles that need updating more often as the scientific field changes so rapidly. While many of our students are interested in scientific topics, the image of our current collection on the shelves (with many older, worn-down books) can seem uninteresting at first glance. With this in mind, I know our students would appreciate the updated materials and would be positively impacted by a newer science collection with books that are not falling apart and that include better content.
