Reading is one of the most incredible super powers that a child receives, while in school. Students come in all shapes and sizes; there is no such thing as an average second grader, they all have different interests and reading abilities, however, all to often districts purchase a one size fits all curriculum. Students are reading texts that are in some cases too hard or too easy and therefore students are not able to grow as readers. My district is working to truly meet each students needs and help each child become a better reader. One way students will become better readers is by giving them choice in what they are reading and matching what they are reading with their reading ability and interest. I am asking for several sets of chapter. I started selecting books by giving my students an interest inventory to find out what they might enjoy reading. I also conducted research on chapter books that would be an appropriate reading level for second grade. I used that information to select a few tittles to start my library. I will use the texts that I have selected to motivate my students to read. Students will select a book to read based on the I-PICK model which teaches children to select books that are “just right” for them. Students will form book groups to read and discuss the chapter books. We will be forming classroom book clubs. Thoughtfully planned book groups can promote a love for literature and a positive attitude towards reading; reflect a student-centered model of literacy, invite natural discussions that lead to student inquiry and critical thinking, foster interaction, cooperation, and collaboration, and lastly provide choice and encourage responsibility. Thank you for taking the time read this and for considering to donate to our classroom.
