Flexible seating promotes the development of the whole student. It provides them the opportunity to choose where and how they learn. Students' senses of responsibility increase when they are empowered to make decisions about the ways they work best. These choices also provide for the many necessities of a diverse student body and create a more welcoming space for all students and their needs as individuals.
At times, we all feel the need to adjust our position and headspace to see things more clearly or from a different perspective, and flexible seating allows students that opportunity on a daily basis. Students will be able to use the yoga balls and stools to promote stronger core muscles and encourage better posture while having the chance to get out some wiggles. The cushions and mini recliners bring mobility and comfort to students in need of different viewpoints, while the bouncy bands will account for those restless legs that can often set in.
Perhaps most importantly, these flexible seating options will allow students to feel at ease and more in control of an environment that is more "ours" than "mine." With all the creature comforts we afford as adults, who could say that our students don't deserve the same things?
