Getting 5th graders to love reading can be a difficult task, and without good and interesting books for them to read, it's nearly impossible. Right now, many of my students struggle with reading, and the reading systems that aim to get their reading levels up to grade level use material that is not engaging or relevant enough to keep their attention.
I want to create a space for my students to engage with good literature, the kind of literature in books that turns a student into a life-long reader. By having a book club where students are able to read in a smaller group and able to talk about books in a less structured setting, I hope to impress a love for reading with some of my students. My hope is that by getting more students interested in reading, they grow in their reading skills, and transfer that growth over to other subjects in school.
So that the students can follow along with the reading, I am asking for donations for a class set of three books we will read together over the course of the rest of the year!
