Due to funding, the library at my school is closed. The books within its walls are dated and the library serves as a space for staff meetings and in school suspension overflow. This is a tragedy. My students need access to current, engaging books at their reading levels. The evidence demonstrating the need for school libraries and access to books is overwhelming. There is a positive correlation between school libraries and student achievement. The fundamental purpose of school libraries is to provide access to books and that access is the primary factor that leads to raising student test scores in all aspects of literacy. Having access to a school library and books also counteracts the effect of poverty and creates a love of learning and a positive effect on student achievement. I am an advocate voicing the need and benefits of a school library, but that is the war. I am hoping you will help me win the battle by placing books in the hands of my students. Help me give my students adventures beyond St. Louis.
