"WHY?" Empower students to develop ownership of their learning by self-selecting seating, while creating a physically and emotionally comfortable community of engaged learners The seating choices that I have selected for my project benefit my students in various ways. Exercise balls: Build core strength and stabillity. Floor pillows/soft pillows: Provide a comfortable learning space. They can be used for students as they lean on a wall, or lay on the carpet. Bouncy bands: Serve as energy release for the more active child. Helps to promote focus while seated. Floor seats: Allow students to work on the carpet and collaborate, while sitting up straight in a chair. "WHY ELSE?" Flexible seating will shift the focus of the classroom from teacher-centric to learner-centric. My fourth grade students will have the opportunity to self-select their seating preference, as well as their location in the room. By providing my students with flexible seating options, my students are in command of their learning. This will be accomplished by establishing a "success criteria" together and reflecting on our experiences as a community. "BUT I NEED MORE!" Flexible seating promotes a culture of collaboration. When you enter my classroom, you are drawn to the students working on the carpet with soft seats where ideas are shared comfortably, not students slumped over their 30-year-old desks. After all, learning is impossible when our students are uncomfortable. "WHAT ABOUT THE RESEARCH?" Flexible seating has been proven to increase motivation and engagement amongst children. In addition, research supports that flexible seating can improve metabolism, build core strength, and create better oxygen flow to the brain. "ANY FINAL POINTS?" It all goes back to the original "why?" My students deserve flexible seating options that support their individual learning needs.
