I introduce three of the most important elements of art: line, shape, and color. But I do so in an unconventional way. They draw lines using sticks that they find outside. This allows them to use a thought process to determine if they should choose a larger stick to achieve a thicker line (or vice versa). They are encouraged to bring in shape from outside of school to work into an overall concept. They are introduced to color creation by bringing in color from home that they must recreate on their own, using the color wheel. I give them the opportunity to create a primary, secondary and tertiary color wheel and then turn that into a creative concept. An example of this is a color wheel that looks like a hot air balloon and then they create the remainder of the drawing/concept around it (ex: a mountain scene or a beach scene). We talk about geography as it applies to their choice of scenery.
