Many of the books we have on our shelves are necessary and enjoyable, but putting a fresh story in front of the kids is a luxury. Of course, we want our children to read all types: dense, archaic, verse, non-fiction, etc. And reading the canon of literature is necessary to understand the human condition in all of its settings, be that time or place. But with new stories, we create new reading appetites for our young people. Let's add to the buffet of choices so our students will ravage the menu of new worlds in print. Children will read when they are hungry for knowledge.
