This project is designed to build a library of art books for kids to use as mentor texts for designing art. I have a very small supply of books that kids can get their hands on in the art room. Some books, like The Noisy Paintbox: the Colors and Sounds of Kandinsky's Abstract Art, are intended to give kids a glimpse into the life of a famous artist. Others, like Too Much Glue, are a fun way for kids to learn the appropriate use of materials for creating art. My goal, using literature in the art room, is to help kids make connections to the world of art, and to help them understand that art is a form of communication. I also want them to make connections between the art room and their own classrooms. The book, The Most Magnificent Thing, talks with kids about how it is okay to make mistakes over and over and the power of creativity and perseverance. All of these support mindful learning that happens in the art room, but also in the regular classroom and in real life. The books in this collection are a starting point for building a bigger collection that kids can use and read. There will need to be a cultural piece added as well as books to promote STEAM and innovation.
