As adults, we are able to identify an environment that is optimal for our own productivity. Some people prefer a formal desk with a swiveling chair, while others can get the most done on the couch in their living room. The same is true for my Fourth graders and through this project I hope to give them the power of choice. As unique learners, they need a variety choices when it comes to seating in the classroom. We are requesting a lounge chair, lap desks, ball chair, yoga ball, bouncy bands and wobble cushions. I hope to inspire a sense of empowerment and engagement in learning by creating a space where students can choose how they learn. Selecting a seating option that works best for you is the first step in identifying your own influence in your learning. My students are starting to see that they can make choices themselves that help them learn more. With an increased sense of empowerment, engagement naturally increases as well. In my currently classroom, students can choose to sit wherever they would like during independent work time. Unfortunately, these options are quite limited in my classroom currently. This project will allow students to have a multitude of choices when it comes to seating. I have chosen the wobble stools for students who prefer to move as they read or solve math problems. The comfy seats will work for a student who feels most comfortable sitting on the floor while also feeling chair-like support. The soft cushions allow students to move throughout the classroom without sitting on the cold ground. I often incorporate choice into learning activities in the classroom. I am excited to see how choice in learning environment can improve student success, too!
