I chose two model sets of bugs. One set has "bad" bug specimens and one set has "good" or beneficial bug specimens. Most of my students think that all bugs are bad but they get interested when they can see them up close. Having correctly identified specimens of both good and bad bugs, will help my students correctly identify and write about specific bugs in their collections. They will gain confidence in handling bugs properly and by acquiring accurate knowledge about them. I want my kids to know bugs are an amazing and vital force necessary in our ecosystems! This Bug Collection Project that my students will be doing will give them real world experience in identifying bugs and their role in the environment so that they can feel confident in knowing which ones can stay and help and which ones they might now want around. And frankly, they will have fun grossing each other out.
