Morning Meeting is a valued time in our classroom and creates a space that encourages vulnerability and empathy. Each day my students practically skip to our meeting space to take part in a short 20 mini lesson that focuses on the whole well-being of each child. They are eager to listen to the read aloud for the day and share their own views of how the lesson relates to themselves. These lessons can range in topic from growth mindset to emotional management to a more worldly view of diversity and how that translates to our own classroom. The content for what is taught during this time is driven by the need I see in our daily interactions and observations of students. The most effective way to teach these lessons and engage students is by using mentor texts to guide discussions. It truly is our favorite part of the day. During this time, students are expected to positively contribute to our classroom community and are encouraged to take what they learn and apply it to life outside our classroom walls. The books that I have selected will help enrich our meetings and provide more materials to meet the ever changing social-emotional needs of my students. I have seen how mentor texts ignite conversation and allow a safe space for all feelings. This project will will allow us to focus on those areas of well-being and strengthen our classroom community.
