This high school is situated in a college town surrounded by rolling hills of farm acreage. My students range from the children of college professors to those preparing to take over the family farm. All are capable and talented, and they respond best to lessons that engage them. They are also very busy students: many start their at 5:30 lifting weights, then put in a full day of classes, then attend a sports practice, then perhaps a drama practice after that. (Our school is large enough to offer the students many opportunities to participate in extra-curricular activities, and over 90% are involved in at least two of them.) Others work after school - at farms, the downtown hardware store, the nursing home. They are polite, grateful, eager students, and I feel fortunate to be able to make a difference in their lives. I am constantly searching for ways to keep them engaged during class to maximize our time together since their "free time" is quite limited.
