In her book The Book Whisperer, Donalyn Miller explains that given independent reading time and the opportunity to choose what to read can convert non-readers into lifelong readers. Traditionally teachers pre-select a book for a class or group of students to read and subsequently complete assignments that go with the text. Choosing a book for students takes away a reader's ownership and very often they find no connection to the book. A variety of books will better meet the needs and interest of students. Literature is powerful and can take my students anywhere, past and future and provide them with experiences that they may never get to have outside of a book. The first book of the Magic Tree House series tells the story of Jack and Annie who are magically transported to the Mesozoic era. While walking through the woods Jack and Annie find a tree house full of books. Jack grabs a book about dinosaurs off a shelf and opens it to a page with a bookmark, a page with a pteranodon. Impressed by the illustration Jack say he wishes he could see a pteranodon for real. Suddenly the house starts spinning when everything stops Jack and Annie are surprised to see a live dinosaur staring at them. Any reader knows that very often books in a series are left with what is called a cliff hangers that make readers want to keep reading. All the books we want for our library provide exactly that. Reading opens doors to worlds unknown, help us fall in love with reading.
