Our school is focusing on Restorative Practices as an alternative to punitive disciplinary actions. We have students who are lacking coping and problem solving skills. Our students are still feeling the ramifications of Hurricane Harvey. Also, we service students from a near by homeless shelter. Therefore, our school is creating a school wide restorative practice protocol. Each classroom will be required to have a peace corner. This peace corner will be used when students need a break or need to calm down. We want to equip each peace corner with a calming box filled with items to assist with relieving stress, anxiety, and anger. We will teach students to use the sand timer to gauge their time. Also, the other such as the stress ball and snap and click fidgets will be utilized as sensory and stress relievers during their time in the peace corner. The kick and bouncy bands will assist students with over activity while remaining in their seats during instructional time. In addition, students will be allowed to choose if they want to draw, write, or listen to music. The 10 drawer rolling cart will assist me in keeping all materials organized. Students will also have an opportunity to have a restorative conference, completing a think sheet, with their teacher and peers. These items will assist with building our calming boxes and our restorative practices throughout our school this year.
