Every classroom needs a few things to get started. Because I am a new teacher, I don't have anything in my classroom yet, and my budget for the upcoming year won't cover everything I need to buy. My middle school students will benefit greatly from having some fundamental classroom organization in place. The file baskets will be hung on the wall of the classroom for them to turn in their work and pick up new materials. The supply caddies for markers, scissors, and pencils to share will help students stay organized and prevent issues that come from students forgetting their supplies. Remember when you were a middle school student? All the little things can really help--especially when it comes to organization! To start out our year, my middle school students will benefit from materials that help with organization and engagement. I selected a variety of tools for use in specific classroom activities. Students will have access to clipboards that can be used with dry-erase markers, so they can collaborate in groups and focus on written work while moving around the room. Allowing students to get up and move a bit can really help combat fatigue and lack of attention, as well as helping with students' overall health. I will also keep language-related games and activities to be available when students finish work early. They will be able to play a game of Scrabble to sharpen their vocabulary or roll the story dice to brainstorm writing projects. These activities can also be used in more structured ways, too, with plenty of possibilities! These classroom basics will help my students and me get established at the beginning of the school year and continue to work in a positive way throughout the year.
