Students will learn how the speaker's point of view impacts the telling of the story as they read Hank's wonky, often doubtful, accounts of his adventures. They will also learn about characterization using an individual's thoughts, words, and actions, and they will find themes throughout the broader narrative arc. We will get the chance to extend the book's literary concepts into the context of real life: understanding how a given point of view affects the information you get, making evidence-based evaluations of the people with whom you interact, and learning to apply valuable lessons from life's challenges. Our class will finish with a project that allows them to either retell the story from another character's point of view, sequence the events in a visual timeline with brief summaries of major plot points, or rewrite their own version of the story to change the ending.
