Mindfulness is paying attention to this moment with curiosity. Mindfulness can be practiced through giving attention to the breath, any of your senses, sensations in your body, thoughts, feelings, or really anything that the moment presents. Judgments happen, but when practicing mindfulness, we notice without attachment, letting judgmental thoughts slip away. The materials in this project will serve to engage my students to practice mindfulness as a foundational skill to raise self-awareness, tolerate distress, regulate emotions and behaviors, and engage meaningfully with others. The yoga mats and related materials will allow for mindful, breath-based movement practice. The wedges and therapy bands will provide sensory input, strengthen focus, and reduce anxiety. The tapestry will hang in the space designated for calm down time. The other resources (fidgets, puzzles, juggling balls, etc) will either be used regularly in the classroom for body/brain breaks, or will serve as incentives for meeting their behavioral goals--including the V5s, or as my students like to call them, the sexy pens ( a crowd favorite).
