An important benefit of Play-Doh is the word “play”. I use Play-Doh almost daily in my classroom. Sometimes when I introduce Play-Doh, I don't have an ultimate agenda or ending outcome in mind. I'm simply giving the children an opportunity to play and socialize. Young children love to share and describe what they are creating. They make new discoveries when observing what their peers are building, exploring and creating. Another important benefit of using Play-Doh in the kindergarten classroom is that Play-Doh increases fine motor strength and skills. Children must use the fine muscles in their hands and fingers when learning to write and color. This can be very challenging for beginning writers as their fine muscles are not yet fully developed and functioning. Using Play-Doh to build fine motor strength and control, helps give those small hands a good workout.
