The science of reading requires students to manipulate letters and sounds. The white boards, chips, pop-its, and dry erase packets will allow them to hear sounds, tactically count the sounds with chips or pop-its, write the letters on the white board, and erase easily in order to manipulate many words in a small group setting. The mirrors will allow students to look at their mouths as they say particular sounds so that they can see if they are forming those sounds correctly. This will also help with correcting speech patterns. The magnetic letters allows teacher and students to make words and manipulate letters easily on the white board. The phonics rules posters and syllable types posters will allow for children to see a picture of the represented rule that is being taught. They can also be hung up in the room for future reference. When the sounds, vowel teams, letters, etc. have been taught, the pointers and highlighters will allow children to put what they've learned into practice by highlighting phonics patterns in reading decodable texts that will further enhance the concepts that have been taught.
