I am fortunate to teach students in small groups of up to 8 children to target their specific and varied areas of need in literacy. During guided reading instruction my students often use leveled readers that I have downloaded and printed out so that students can work together from the same book but at their own individual reading level. They are then able to discuss and build on others' ideas about what they have read, increasing their vocabulary and comprehension. This project will allow students a highly engaging way to access a world of books and information that will continuously spur their curiosity to read and learn more. The iPads will give students added motivation to work on research for writing projects that last over a period of time. Students can gain confidence by working with the iPads to improve their literacy skills. The 2 iPads will be a valuable support for my diverse group of learners. Few tools can be used with such a high level of effectiveness by students in grades K-5 of differing abilities. Developing their literacy and technology skills together will have an important impact on their overall achievement.
