I teach 550 students in a very diverse school. Most of my students can’t afford their own instruments, and I currently have a small inventory of wind instruments to meet the needs of hundreds of students. My third grade students built their skills on recorder last year, and I want to provide new and exciting challenges for them through recorder, percussion, and brass ensembles. This is a starting point, but I’d love to get my students band instruments down the road, too! These materials will help hundreds of students find their unique, musical voice for self-expression. Their passion for social justice and their new musical skills will give them the opportunity to use performance as a way to make a difference in their community. Music brings people together, and the ensembles created from these instruments will provide new opportunities for students to find a meaningful community with a common goal.
