My students work hard and need an area to assist with over-stimulation when exposed to crowds, new environments and information. To assist with these "brain breaks" I have created an area for my students to go. My students will be able to go to an isolated area where they independently self-regulate their sensory needs for comfort before returning to small group, whole group, or one-on-one instruction in a calming, relaxed state. By funding this project you will be helping my students self-regulate their need for comfort while increasing their ability to adjust to their environment; therefore increasing academic success and social independence. The books provided will help their peers understand my students and what they need. My students will learn typical social "norm" from their peers and their peers will learn compassion, patience, and love from them. My students display specific repetitive behaviors "stimming" when needing to be calmed. Many times we are unaware what specific sensory item is needed at that time; though we are aware of my students' favorite items. Most of these calming mechanisms are done in isolation. The tents create an isolated area with multiple sensory items inside to help him or her in their calming state. I have orchestrated peer reading with other classes and before it begins I will begin the lesson with a book simplifying Autism and what it means.
