Listen to Reading is a vital part of our literacy centers. Center time allows students the ability to take ownership over their learning by giving them the gift of "choice." Students have the ability to chose the center that they feel they need to work on for the day and where in the class is the best possible location to complete that work. The Listen to Reading center is a class favorite where students have the ability to choose from various stories and listen to them being read aloud with clarity, voice, and intonation; all key aspects that are vital for my English Language Learners as they develop their language skills. My "Did You Hear That?! Listen to Reading My Way" Project provides students with portable CD players and headphones giving them the best listening experience as they learn to appreciate and enjoy some of the greatest early childhood literature. The portable CD players provide students the ability to move freely around the classroom finding a spot they are comfortable to work in. In addition, the headphones eliminate background noise and allow students to work independently as they generate their own conclusions about the story they are listening to. I have also opted to order a few headphone adapters that will allow two students to listen to the same story for more difficult stories that require discussion.
