The goal of my AP Computer Science Principles class is to broaden participation in computer science. The world needs more people who understand how programming works and the impact that it has on our world. Right now, the set of people who are going into this field is not as diverse as it needs to be. I plan to use technology tools like the micro:bits that I am requesting for this project to get more students interested in computer science and make the field more accessible to students from all backgrounds. Micro:bits are a fun way for students to create and witness a physical solution to a programming problem without needing any prior coding knowledge (though they are great for students with coding knowledge as well!). We can't let students feel intimidated by coding or by technology, we have to let them experiment with it in ways that help them realize that they can succeed. The micro:bits and associated accessories that I am asking for will help us get more students involved in computer science by showing them that they don't need coding experience to take AP Computer Science Principles and that they can already solve a lot of the problems that programmers will face in the course. Computer science is a way of thinking, not a set of skills that you learn by typing on your computer. It is something that every student can contribute to and a field that needs diverse opinions. Help me spread that message to the students in Delaware, Ohio!
