Our state is moving towards the New Generation Science Standards which are requiring to experience 3-D learning. 3-D learning includes Science and Engineering Practices, Cross-Cutting Concepts and Disciplinary Core Ideas. My goal this year is to transform my students to scientists and engineers by conducting many investigations to explore phenomena in the natural world.
We will be using interactive notebooks and other investigative materials in our classroom as a means to ensure students become independent thinkers and information gathers. To start, the prong folders will be used to house non-fiction articles provided to students for background information about a phenomena that correlates with a standard. The 3-ring pencil pouches will go on the arm of student's desk and will house materials needed for that day's lesson and supplies such as pencils, sticky-notes, hi-lighters, etc. The beakers will be used to conduct investigations regarding the atmosphere (ocean currents). The electric kettle is used to conduct investigations that require water to be heated whereas, the balloons will be used in investigations that require students to have a model of the Earth. Also, the washers and twine twisted polyester will be used investigations around the transformation of energy, and conductivity of objects. Lastly, the marbles will be used in many physical science lessons around potential and kinetic energy. Oftentimes our students do not have access to the materials needed to become beginner scientists and engineers . With your help all of the materials will definitely be the difference my students need to experience Science on a higher level.
